Search Tips

Are you searching for a Bill, Introduction or Resolution?
Legislation pending in the Council is called an Introduction. When an Introduction is signed by the Mayor or enacted by veto it becomes a Local Law and is assigned a new number. Resolutions are used by the Council as a vehicle for legislative action and to express the sentiment of the body on important public policy issues.

Introductions are numbered in multi-year cycles.
There is a multi-year numbering system for Introductions, so the first Introduction of a year may not be "0001". Try searching for the Introduction across "All years", or if you are looking for legislation introduced in a particular year, you can see all legislation for a year.

Are you using the correct Bill, Introduction or Resolution numbering syntax?
Introductions and Resolutions are assigned a number according to order that they were introduced in a year. For instance "0001-2004" is the first bill introduced for 2004. If you know what Introduction or Resolution number you are looking for it is best to use the four-digit number, for instance "0029" in the year it was introduced, or for "All Years" Laws are assigned a number corresponding to the year and order in which they are adopted. For instance "2004/005" is Local Law 5 of the year 2004. Often, when someone is referring to "Local Law 5" they mean a law from a certain year, although there may be many such laws. It is best to search for "/" and then the three-digit law number under "All Years" or the year it was adopted, for instance "/005"

Can you limit the search key words you are using?
Limit your search to one or two key words. For instance, use "gun" instead of "gun control". Currently, the legislation search tool looks for exact matches in the body or introduction of legislation.
