tip 1Get Screened for Breast Cancer

If you're 40 or older, have a mammogram every one to two years.
Be sure to ask your doctor or other healthcare provider about a clinical breast exam.
Learn how to do a breast self-exam and do them regularly.

There are many options for women needing a mammogram or clinical breast exam.  Women who have a regular care provider or gynecologist should ask these professionals about getting checked for breast cancer.  If you do not have a regular care provider or gynecologist, there are many free or low cost services available, even for women without health insurance.

The Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) offers mammograms at little or no cost. For locations, please visit http://www.nyc.gov/html/hhc/html/community/hhc-mammograms.shtml or all 311 and ask for a "mammogram."
In addition, the following sites in New York City offer free mammograms to qualified uninsured persons all year round, through the New York State DOH Breast Cancer Program. (The entire list for New York State is located at this website: http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/cancer/center/ partnerships.htm#content).
